Cultural Context

"All pau" is a universally used Hawaiian Pidgin expression combining the English word "all" with the Hawaiian word "pau" (finished, done, or ended). It is spoken by locals of all ages and backgrounds to indicate that a task is completed, a meal is finished, or a supply is completely depleted. The phrase is highly versatile and appropriate in almost any casual or semi-formal setting, from a server at a restaurant asking if you are finished with your plate to a construction worker signaling the end of a shift. Because "pau" is one of the most deeply integrated Hawaiian words in daily local vocabulary, adding "all" simply emphasizes the absolute completion of the subject at hand. It is rarely considered inappropriate, though in highly formal English contexts, standard phrasing might be preferred.
