Cultural Context
"Buk buk" is a highly specific, older local slang term primarily used within the Filipino community in Hawaii, or by locals describing a certain eccentric Filipino aesthetic. It refers to someone dressing in a mismatched, overly flashy, or uncoordinated way, often stereotyping the "fresh-off-the-boat" (FOB) look of recent immigrants from the Philippines.
While it can be used playfully among close friends or family members to tease someone about a terrible outfit choice, it carries a strong derogatory undertone. Calling someone "buk buk" implies they lack local fashion sense or are trying too hard to look stylish but failing miserably. Because of its roots in immigrant stereotyping, it is generally considered inappropriate to use outside of familiar, in-group teasing, as it can easily cross the line into an insult.
The Story
Cora gripped the steering wheel of the Tacoma, staring straight ahead at the faded yellow lines of the Don Quijote Waipahu parking lot. The AC was blasting, but the air inside the cab felt suffocating. In the rearview mirror, she caught Yoona’s eyes—narrowed, silently judging the situation from the backseat. Neither of them had spoken since leaving the house, the heavy silence thick with the argument they hadn't finished about the family's finances.
The passenger door finally yanked open, letting in the humid afternoon heat. Clyde slid into the seat, completely oblivious to the tension. He was wearing a bright purple polo tucked into oversized camouflage cargo shorts, topped with a woven fedora he’d bought at the Aloha Stadium swap meet. He adjusted his mirrored sunglasses and let out a loud sigh, waiting for someone to compliment his outfit.
Yoona leaned forward, her voice dripping with quiet disdain. "You really going to the graduation party looking all buk buk like that? People going think you just got off the plane." Clyde’s jaw tightened, his hand freezing on the seatbelt, the unspoken resentment between them finally snapping into focus.
