Cultural Context
"Hele aku" is a fundamental Hawaiian phrase that has been fully integrated into everyday Pidgin. Rooted in the Hawaiian word "hele" (to go, walk, or travel) and the directional particle "aku" (away from the speaker), it literally translates to "go away" or "move along."
It is used by locals of all ages and backgrounds, often as a direct but not necessarily hostile command to leave a place or get moving. While it can be used aggressively to tell someone to scram during an argument, it is just as frequently used in a lighthearted, practical way among friends and family when it is time to pack up and head out. Because it draws directly from the Hawaiian language, it carries a sense of place and authenticity that standard English equivalents lack.
The Story
The frost was still thick on the kikuyu grass when Sione backed his Tacoma up to the Waimea fence line. He stepped out in just a faded surf shirt and boardshorts, shivering but refusing to show it. Kalani was already there, leaning against his own lifted Yota, wrapped in a thick Carhartt jacket and holding a steaming thermos of Zippy's chili. "You think you one tough guy, ah?" Kalani smirked, taking a slow, deliberate bite. "Real paniolo no need jacket, but you look like you going freeze to death before we even saddle up."
Sione crossed his arms, his teeth practically chattering. "Brah, I was born in Waimea. Dis cold is nothing. I can rope three calves before you even finish your breakfast." Hoku, who had been quietly tightening the cinch on her quarter horse, rolled her eyes at the two of them. She swung up into the saddle, looking down at Sione's bare, goosebump-covered legs.
"If you going just stand there and make mouth while your knees knock together, you might as well hele aku back to your warm bed," Hoku said, clicking her tongue to get her horse moving. "Da cows not going wait for you guys to figure out who get the biggest ego." Kalani busted out laughing, pointing his spoon at Sione, who finally gave up and sprinted back to his truck to grab a hoodie.
