Cultural Context
The term "Jawaiian" is widely used by locals, radio DJs, and musicians to describe the dominant contemporary music style of the islands. It is the perfect word to use when talking about the soundtrack of local life, from backyard parties to cruising in the car, but might be used slightly pejoratively by traditionalists who prefer classic Hawaiian falsetto and slack key guitar over heavy bass and synthesizers.
Historically, the genre exploded in the late 1980s and 1990s when Jamaican reggae deeply resonated with Hawaii's youth. Local artists began blending the signature off-beat reggae rhythm with Hawaiian melodies, harmonies, and lyrics about local culture and sovereignty. Today, Jawaiian music is a massive cultural force, with local bands regularly topping reggae charts worldwide and defining the modern sound of Hawaii.
The Story
Mike was slamming the steering wheel of his lifted Tacoma, stuck in dead-stop traffic right by Palama Settlement, while the radio blasted a heavy Jawaiian beat. In the passenger seat, Lorna was yelling into her phone trying to order three zip pacs from the School Street Zippy's, but the connection kept dropping. "No, I said no tartar sauce! Hello?!" she screamed over the thumping bass of The Green.
In the backseat, Lani was having a complete meltdown because she dropped her phone between the seats and couldn't reach it. "Mike, turn down the music! I cannot think, and my hand is stuck!" she wailed, kicking the back of his seat. Mike just cranked the volume higher, shouting back, "You cannot turn down Jawaiian music on a Friday, Lani! It's against the law!"
"I swear to God, Mike, if you don't lower that fake Bob Marley nonsense, I'm throwing your hydro flask out the window!" Lorna yelled, finally giving up on the Zippy's order. The bass rattled the rearview mirror so hard it tilted sideways, reflecting Lani's arm wedged elbow-deep in the upholstery while Mike just kept drumming on the dashboard, completely ignoring the chaos erupting inside the cab.
