In traditional Hawaiian culture, a kahuna is a highly respected master, expert, or priest in a specific discipline, such as healing (kahuna lāʻau lapaʻau), canoe building (kahuna kālai waʻa), or agriculture. In modern Hawaii, locals of all backgrounds use the term to respectfully acknowledge someone who possesses deep, specialized knowledge or unmatched skill in their craft, whether they are a master mechanic, an expert fisherman, or a brilliant chef. While it is a term of reverence, it should be used carefully; casually calling oneself a kahuna is seen as arrogant and disrespectful to the rigorous training the title historically demands. It is almost always bestowed upon someone by others as a sign of deep respect for their mastery and wisdom.

Manny sat on the faded wooden bench outside the Waimea theater, peeling a tangerine with agonizing slowness. The afternoon heat had baked the red dirt into a fine dust that settled over his work boots, but he wasn't in any rush to head back up the canyon.
