Cultural Context
"Kim chee breath" is a common, mildly offensive slang term used across Hawaii to describe someone with noticeably bad breath, particularly when it smells of garlic, onions, or pungent fermented foods. The phrase stems from the strong, lingering odor of kimchi, a staple Korean side dish made of salted and fermented vegetables that is heavily integrated into local Hawaii plate lunch culture. While it is often used jokingly among close friends or family members to tease someone after a heavy meal, using it with strangers or in professional settings is considered rude and insulting. The term highlights how deeply Asian culinary influences are woven into the everyday vocabulary of the islands, turning a beloved local food into a universal descriptor for halitosis.
The Story
The AC in Fale’s Tacoma was broken, making the dead-stop traffic on the Kapa'a bypass feel even more suffocating. In the passenger seat, Lori kept leaning over the center console, complaining loudly about the new housekeeping manager at the resort. Every time she emphasized a word, a hot wave of garlic and chili pepper hit Fale right in the face. He gripped the steering wheel tighter, staring straight ahead at the bumper of the lifted Ford in front of them, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached.
"I mean, who she think she is, telling us how for fold the towels?" Lori huffed, turning her head so her face was inches from Fale’s shoulder. In the backseat, Puanani slowly rolled down her window, pretending to look at the cane grass but desperately gasping for the humid afternoon air. Fale shot Puanani a dark look through the rearview mirror. He didn't want to start a fight before they even reached Lihu'e, but Lori’s kim chee breath was practically burning his eyelashes off.
"Lori, do me one favor," Fale finally muttered, his voice dangerously low as he reached into the glovebox and shoved a crushed pack of Extra peppermint gum into her lap. "Chew this. The whole pack. Before I make you walk the rest of the way down Kuhio Highway." Lori blinked, offended, but the heavy silence that fell over the truck meant she finally got the hint.
