The term "futless" is widely used across Hawaii to describe someone who is restless, fidgety, or physically unable to sit still. It is most commonly directed at children who are squirming during church, long car rides, or family gatherings, but it applies equally to adults who are pacing or acting antsy. The word carries a mild tone of annoyance, usually spoken by a parent, elder, or irritated companion who wants the person to settle down and stop causing a distraction.

Linguistically, "futless" is a classic example of Hawaiian Pidgin's descriptive nature. While its exact origins are debated—some believe it stems from "footless" (lacking the ability to stand firmly in one place), while others connect it to the local slang "fut" (fart), implying a nervous, shifting energy—the meaning is universally understood. It is appropriate for casual, everyday conversation among locals but would be out of place in formal or professional settings.

The rain was coming down sideways across the Hilo farmers market tarps, and Mike was already losing his patience. We could be eating loco moco at Ken's right now instead of drowning out here." Lani shot them both a lethal glare over her shoulder, effectively silencing the complaints, though Makana continued to twitch and shuffle in the mud.
