The term "ganja" is widely used across Hawaii by locals, especially among younger generations, surfers, and reggae enthusiasts, to refer to marijuana. While appropriate in casual settings, parties, or discreet conversations among friends, it is highly inappropriate in professional, formal, or family environments with strict elders.

The word originates from Sanskrit and Hindi, was brought to the Caribbean by indentured Indian workers, and eventually popularized globally by Jamaican Rastafarian culture and reggae music. In Hawaii, where reggae and "Jawaiian" music are deeply ingrained in the local lifestyle, the word was naturally adopted into the Pidgin lexicon, often used interchangeably with the native Hawaiian term "pakalolo."

Kekoa leaned against the tailgate of his lifted Tacoma, wiping drywall dust off his neon yellow safety shirt. The Kapolei sun was beating down on the new subdivision, but he had a smug grin plastered across his face. The young apprentice just nodded, trying to look impressed while keeping an eye out for the foreman. Kekoa unscrewed the lid, letting the pungent aroma fill the cab of the truck. "I tell you what, one hit of dis and you gonna be floating all da way back to Waipahu. But no worry, I only share da top shelf stuff with my crew."
