In Hawaii, "rubbish" is the universal term for trash, garbage, or refuse. While mainland Americans typically say "take out the trash" or "empty the garbage," locals almost exclusively use "rubbish" in both household and commercial settings. You will hear it everywhere from a parent telling their kids to take out the rubbish, to signs at county parks reading "Please take your rubbish with you."

Beyond physical waste, the word is frequently used as an adjective to describe something of poor quality, a bad idea, or complete nonsense. If a movie was terrible, a local might say, "Ah, that movie was rubbish." The term stems directly from British English influence during the plantation era and the early days of the Hawaiian Kingdom, becoming deeply embedded in the local lexicon. It is appropriate in all casual and professional situations.

The sun was finally dipping below the kiawe trees at the Kihei job site, casting long shadows over the half-finished foundation. Kimo wiped a mixture of sweat and red dirt from his forehead, leaning heavily against his shovel. He gestured toward the scattered piles of empty cement bags, broken zip ties, and lunch wrappers blowing across the dirt. "Eh Nohea, you going help us pick up all this rubbish, or you just going sit there looking pretty?"

Nohea didn't even look up from his phone, boots propped up on a stack of hollow tile blocks. "I sweeping da inside tomorrow, so outside rubbish is you guys' problem," he shot back with a tired grin. Kimo just shook his head, laughing as he grabbed a heavy-duty black bag. "Lazy buggah. Next time we ordering Zippy's, you eating da rubbish too."
